Student Interview; Kuntal Mukharjee

We keep conducting our ex students' interview to know what they have experienced from MAAC Kolkata and how their life has changed after qualifying from MAAC Kolkata. We also try to guide all of you via the interviews we conduct.

Today we are sharing the interview of Kuntal Mukharjee, one of our ex student who is now a post production instructor in MAAC itself.  

Interviewer: Hi Kuntal, how are you?

Kuntal: I am good sir, how about you?

Interviewer: doing well. So tell us Kuntal how does it feel coming to your institute back after such a long time that to be for giving an interview?

Kuntal: (laughs) amazing! I was a confused student before I learnt about MAAC. Like any other student I was surfing internet to seek a great opportunity to give a kick to my career. And then learnt about MAAC Kankurgachi. And today I am a proud student of MAAC Kankurgachi. And a proud employ of MAAC Gorakhpur.

Interviewer: Wow! That a proud moment for all of us. So what do you do at MAAC Gorakhpur?

Kuntal: I work there as the post production instructor. I look after the production team and invigilate them after production jobs.

Interviewer: great. Do you want to say something to the readers about MAAC Kankurgachi?

Kuntal: sure! It’s an amazing place to learn about VFX and animation. Teachers here are supportive and encouraging. If anybody wanting their career in animation field, this is the place.

Things to remember when joining the Animation/VFX industry

Career is one of the most important decision one takes in its lifespan. Career decides ones future. If you looking for a successful career in the field of animation and VFX, below are few important points we penned down for your better decision making.                                                                                                                                                                  
1)  Apt knowledge on 2D & 3D software

You need to know a brief knowledge about 2D and 3D animations. When you opt for Animation & VFX you need to learn much software to upgrade your understanding in these fields.

2)    Teamwork

Most important! Working with people means understanding each other. You need to listen to them and at the same time you should have capability to make them understand your point of view.

3)  Know the Path

Animation and VFX are wide. You need to understand where your interest lies. Discover your passion and follow. To understand where the interest lays one can have one on one conversation with their faculty.

4 )  Portfolio

If you planning to get into animation industry it’s the right time to build your portfolio. To build once Protfolio you need to do few researches. Contact to your seniors and take an idea how you can work on it. Once should be ready with a complimenting Portfolio after the completion of course.

 5)    Arranging the portfolio

Nobody has enough time to go through each work you have done. Show them the best you have done. Arrange your portfolio from best to normal.

6)      Patience

Time! Give yourself and your career time to reach stars. People working in this field earn a lot much but after a certain reputation has built. So give time but don’t give up.

MAAC National Students Meet

MAAC keep hosting events where students get opportunities to showcase their skills & to interact with experienced animation, VFX, gaming and media & entertainment professionals.  

This time MAAC is conducting NSM in Goa on 8^th-11^th August 2016. The idea behind this event is to encourage VFX & Animation students from all over MAAC India to be a part of creative seminars, case studies, panel discussions and the fun activities. NSM provides a platform to collaborate on live projects, networks with famous and successful personalities of the animation industry and get access to real life experience & industry insights.

During the four day event MAAC students attend workshop and spend time with leading name from the film industry and get access to industry insights. It helps you do one on one conversation with them and clarify all doubts. Such opportunities should be grabbed. MAAC is providing you this golden chance.

Vfx Artist: Duties &Requirements

Visual effects artists are responsible for creating computer generated animations and special effects on screens at home and in theatres. It’s like bringing fascinating and fantasy world into life. It's necessary to gain the training to work as a visual effects artist via a degree or certificate program in a field like computer animation.

Duties

Vfx work is to create imagery that is either impractical or impossible to film. Vfx is currently done via computer. This work includes creating animations for television shows, commercials and feature films.

Vfx artists are expected to work on tight deadlines due to theatrical release dates working in the film industry. This job involves following instructions from a client and may not allow for the possibility of much personalized input.

Requirements

Students need to have understanding of standard software tools of the industry, such as Houdini, Nuke, Render Man, Adobe CS5, mental ray, and Autodesk Maya. Although a degree is not necessarily required for this job. A bachelor's degree is standard and completing a certificate or degree program can help signify qualification to work as a vfx artist. 

VFX and Animation Seminar

Seminars are the best way to bring together group of people for a wealthy discussion. MAAC Kolkata also arranged a seminar in Kala Mandir auditorium Kolkata. This seminar took place on 14^th June. 500 students who were interested in the field of VFX and animation attended the seminar.

Gitanjali Rao, independently produced and directed two short animated films ‘Orange’ and ‘Printed Rainbow’ was the key note speaker of the seminar. Both her movies have won 28 awards.

Prasad Sutar, was the speaker in the seminar. He is an Indian VFX designer, coordinator and supervisor known for his work in Hindi cinema. He has won the AsianFilm Awards Best Visual Effects for film Bajirao Mastani.  

Both the chief guests gave motivated speech to the students and encouraged them to opt for these courses to have a bright career in future. The entire seminar was a grand success.

2D Animation Film Festival

Today we'll talk about 2d animation. 

2d animation is the art of creating moment in two dimensional artistic spaces. Working in this field one needs to have both creativity and technological skills. 2d animation is often thought as a traditional animation.  It focuses on creating storyboard and background in two dimensional environments. This animation is used in advertisement, films, television shows, computer games or websites.

We at MAAC Kolkata organising an internal 2d animation short film festival, that will take place in all the three institutes; MAAC Chowringhee, MAAC Kankurgachi and MAAC Rashbehari. As it’s an internal festival, student from Chowringhee, Kankurgachi and Rashbehari will participate in their respective institutes.

Be a part of 24fps

In our last blog we talked about 24fps International Short Film Festival. Today we will gear up MAAC Kolkata students to participate and make us proud.

Everybody has that moment in their life which made them feel on cloud nine, it’s time to share that moment with us and with the world. 24fps is giving that golden chance to all. 

Students from MAAC Chowringhee, Maac Rashbehari and MAAC Kankurgachi are invited to participate in the competition.  Interested students submit their moment story and the best story will be selected for movie making and the respective student will get a prize.

Let’s work hard together for being a part of 24fps International Short Film Festival.

24fps International Short Film Festival Preparations

Since its inception in 1999, the aspiring artists from all over world are participating in 24fps International Short Film Festival. This festival takes place in Mumbai. The juries competition is open to any work made outside the major worldwide film studio system. The time duration for movies is 3 minutes. They appreciate the festival’s top films with the cash award.

MAAC Kolkata has always been a participant of this event. Students from all the three centers; MAAC Chowringhee, MAAC Rashbehari and MAAC Kankurgachi participates. Students from all the three centers always make sure to grab a prize; this has resulted for all of them to get a placement with different production houses. Proud Moment!

Every year they provide with a new theme for movies. This year, 2016 the theme is MOMENTS.

Students from MAAC Kolkata are working hard to bring the award home.

And the journey continues... Aniket The director.

In our last story we talked about Aniket's journey as a struggler, how he reached MAAC Rashbehari and how he decided to take his career up with animation. Today we will talk about his journey as a director.

Aniket started as an assistant director with some prominent producing houses in Kolkata and contributed in many hits. Shortly he decided to direct his own film independently which gave birth to a Bengali movie  ‘Saubala.’ And he decided to send ‘Saubala’ to festival De Cannes in the short film corner.

“My first project coincided with the real step into film fraternity, Cannes. I’m lucky, I know that. I will be continuing doing the kind of work that will bring me back here and out there in the world of international cinema. If that happens, who know one day Cannes might get to know me. For now, I’m just content with intent on soaking in the scenes, a walk in the clouds and lying by sleepy Blue Ocean” said Aniket.

Aniket thank a lot to his team for making his dream possible and making it a hit. He in future aims to follow footsteps of the great Bengali directors of Yester-Years who bought name and fame to the country by capturing the new face of a really evolving India, where past embraces present to create a comfortable uneasy future.

MAAC Kolkata Summer Festival

Hello summers!

As it’s said the tans will fade but the memories will last forever.  MAAC Kolkata also made its summer memory by celebrating Summer Festival on 7^th May 2016.

This festival collaborated students’ work and their unique creativity. Like making fruit art.

Not only the art creativity, also students came forward and shown talent in cultural activities. Like Rabindra sangeet, classical dance and talent show at musical instruments.  It was heart-warming view seeing students’ involvement to such an extent and their sporty enthusiasm during the festival.  

While the sun was burning like a furnace the joy of celebrating Summer Festival acted like the cool breeze.

We thank our students and Staff for making the festival a great success and hope for more festival like this to come in future.
