Agomoni - Student Art Exhibition

Agomoni - As the name means is  ‘A warm welcome to the mother’. Its a grand celebration of welcoming goddess Durga and her children to our home. 

We celebrate Agomoni in all our three centers - MAAC Chowringhee, MAAC Kankurgachi, MAAC Rashbehari with extreme enthusiasm, where the students play the leading role in the preparation of decorating their respective centers thematically. Perhaps, this is the biggest celebration that we have at MAAC KOLKATA which continues for two days.The most beautiful part of this celebration is the preparation and planning phase of this festival, and that is no way less than a festival itself in terms of excitement.It gives  immense pleasure to think of the days when students start the countdown towards the D-day. Our  heart fills with prayers, love happiness of welcoming someone very near.

During the celebration,  students’ organise art exhibition in all our three centers, where the students give their best effort to design their skill digitally or manually.  On the opening day diyas are lightened by the elder-most member of our MAAC KOLKATA family which resembles the enlightenment of knowledge over the darkness. Then the Director appreciates and rewards the most beautiful works by students. And the day ends by the students’ performances on their talents like singing, dancing, acting etc. Even parents, family members, relatives, friends are invited to be the part of the celebration.

INTERVIEW OF OUR AWESOME TRAINEE @MAAC CHOWRINGHEE

Here we bring one more interview for you. Kousik De one of our ex student is today a successful Digital artist. Let’s hear from him about his experience.

Interviewer: hi kousik, how have u been?

Kousik De: hi, I have been doing well and I hope same for you too.

Interviewer: thank you. We are doing well too. So Kousik, tell us about your work life.

Kousik De: well, today I am a Visualize/Owner of Talking Canvas, a new born creative design agency.

I am a Rabindra Bharati University pass out. After which I joined Zee Bangla as an illustration artist. Then MAAC Chowringhee has changed my life to a 'Digital' Artist. I got too much help from MAAC Chowringhee to be a 3D Artist and Compositing Artist. I joined Prime Focus (Mumbai) after completing C3D2 course from MAAC Chowringhee.

I worked as a Graphic Designer/Visualize in a few companies at Kolkata for 4 years. I was not satisfied with that. I wanted to do the design works in a different way. So I left job and started to think something different. I spent 3 months as unemployed and was preparing myself to be an Independent Designer. I started my new life as a Freelancer Graphic Designer. First month was too good but the 2^nd month of my freelancer life was not so good. But I never felt hopeless. From 3rd month I revived my career as a freelancer. 2 years I was involved with a large number of clients. Then I started my small new organization named Talking Canvas (a creative Graphic Design house). New born company is running well.

Interviewer: wow! Trust me that sound really amazing.  Which course did you do in MAAC Chowringhee and in which year?

Kousik De: (laughs) thank you. I did C3D2, that is 3Ds Max, Maya, After Effects, Fusion and Shake. In the year 2010.

Interviewer: Great! Would you like to share your learning experience at MAAC Chowringhee?

Kousik De: sure. It was really awesome. I got huge help from faculties in subject, concept, and software related problems. Even from home, if I contacted with them through e-mail/phone they usually tried to solve all my queries and problems. My faculty was Mr. Siddharth Jaiswal. He was very much experienced and helpful teacher. I got huge number of creative ideas and software knowledge from him (Till now I have good relationship with him. Till now he helps me for any type of technical issues and other issues. All faculties keep good relationship).

 My experience at there was really good and positive. I always recommend MAAC Chowringhee to the new comer students (who are trying to enter in the creative industry) because I believe this is   No. 1 training institute at Kolkata.

 For other technical issues, Job related helps were nicely done by MAAC Chowringhee official authority. MAAC Chowringhee organized huge number of competition, workshop and seminar. I attended in maximum programmes at there. MAAC Chowringhee gave me and all students the opportunity to attend in Animation Film Festival at a reputed Cinema Hall free of cost. I was really enjoyed the programme. MAAC Chowringhee also gave some more opportunity to enjoy other workshops. I and my 3 mates made a short film at there by the help of our faculty (Siddharth Jaiswal) and MAAC Chowringhee studio. Camera, technical support and other equipments were supplied by MAAC Chowringhee. I am really grateful to the faculties and MAAC Chowringhee.

Interviewer: thank you for such kind words. We are grateful that we reached your expectations and could help you in all possible ways. Well, I am keen to know that as a Designer/Visualize, what the most important things to follow.

Kousik De: well this job requires visualization, space distribution, look and feel, research, value the work, maintain the unique style for each work, reject personal style, thinking, study different subjects and last but not the least the observation.

Interviewer: Tell us about a project you worked on that required heavy research work and how you do that?

Kousik De: I worked on "Marrakesh strategy conference" project of TATA TSPDL. It was a strategy conference at Marrakesh (city in morocco). I did their total theme. Started from conference logo to booklet and other materials like banner, backdrop etc. There I had to research to make the theme. I studied a lot to make it.

I had no idea about Morocco or Marrakesh. I viewed many videos and documentary films to know their culture. Studied some e-books to understand the society. Viewed a lot of photography of the city to know the people, architecture and the nature. I studied many books on the city. Then I captured all in my mind. Then I created my own idea on the project. That was an awesome experience. Though I had to spend more time to realise and create the theme.

Interviewer: what’s the most interesting project that you have worked on?

Kousik De: Most interesting project was Strawberry body (USA) brand identity and business material design. I did their designs from company launching. Worked on their logo and website. Another interesting project was TATA TSPDL project. The project title was 'Service Excellence'. I did their visuals, banners, standees, computer wallpapers for them. It was really an interesting project. The designs were based on concept.  There are many more to share.

Interviewer: What tips would you like to share with freshers?

Kousik De: Work hard. Hard working will make you successful in life. Do research on all subjects you are interested. Observation is the most important. One interesting fact: To be a professional Graphic designer you need to know the clients mind, psychology, client's profession and the city living in. Not only good work. You have to know the client first. A good work could impact badly on another person. So good or bad depends on a client's aspect. You should research on client before you start a Graphic Design (though project brief is most important).

24 FPS VFX CHALLENGE PREPARATION !!! WE ARE READY

STUDENT EXPERIENCE OF MAAC CHOWRINGEE OVER 24FPS VFX CHALLENGE SHOOT

Every year, we arrange shooting for 24FPS VFX Challenge. This time on 14.7.16, we had arranged a place near Gateway Hotel, Ruby and started our shooting set-up process we set up the light & chroma shoot platform. It almost took around 1 hour 30 min to do the entire setup & after that we had started with the shooting. We had arranged a high end DSLR camera, with a professional cameraman, arranging track for camera movement, baby lighting, softbox etc.

Students made arrangement of all the props, costumes, makeup etc. It took full day to shoot as per our requirement. This year we also did the Chrome Ball Photography, which was a new thing to the students, and later on they will be using that data for their CG lighting purpose. One of our highly experienced faculties’ from Maac center, who had worked in Hollywood movies, came from Mumbai to guide us. It was a fun filled day with lots of learning, planning, and execution.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE OF MAAC KANKURGACHI OVER 24FPS VFX CHALLENGE SHOOT

Every year, Maac Kankurgachi takes part in the VFX Challenge of the 24FPS Competition, which is a way for students learn hands on practical training that too at par industry-level work by recreating shots from renowned films with live-action and computer-generated components. The live-action shoot for this year's VFX Challenge was successfully held on Thursday, 14th July. It was a unique experience for the team, who had chosen a sequence to shots from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Students were provided a studio-like set-up with professional camera equipment and a chroma-ready set, props, costumes and make-up, actors with guidance from the experience faculty members of the centre. Based on the demo shoots done as practice over the past few weeks. They have now begun processing the footage and undertaking production-stage work. Now we are all waiting for the D-day when our production will be ready to launch.

Big Animation Studios Versus Indie Production

In the 1980s, the release of blockbuster animations, like who framed Roger Rabbit, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros came up and they started hiring artists and designers from every corner of the globe. European artists started hiring kids from colleges and some even before graduation. Big and major production houses began to increase the staff numbers, buying properties and paying magnificent salaries. And soon after these artists became hot commodities.

But the glamour is never permanent, soon the things began to feel formulaic and studios fell into trap.  The big studio system lost sight of the story. With the bigger budgets nobody wanted to take a chance with the creative process. In this scenario, independent studios & production houses started making movie and benefited from the audience’s demand for something different.

Now the independent artists are setting up their personal studios in their homes and animators, who used to work for big production houses are now appearing as production heads of their own studios.

Studios started finding cost effective ways of producing their work and began looking overseas by the year 2000. Due to the decrease in staff requirement many artists left out of work. During this period the Troy Story released and made money at the box office and other major studios had realization that collaborating with some of the new, slick CGI studios could be advantageous.

Indies, also known as independent studios started putting up their own films. During the first decade of the millennium, the independent production company rush was the trend that had captured the attention of mainstream audiences across the world.

Indie production companies are now emerging in great numbers due to technological progress that has created an entirely different setup of the animation studio. It is more efficient to set up a studio where all the equipment's of production could comfortably be installed on one workstation. Indeed it seems the crop of indie production companies has grown continuing to have smaller budgets.  

Diversification added to this process further. Considering the vast number of options available today like DVD, video games, commercials, internet, wireless and more, the new emerging consumer arenas like e-learning and ethnic entertainment target markets the scope for indie  production  is growing each day.

No one knows where the story will end. Perhaps this new renaissance of indie productions will give birth to its own list of lessons to be learned and challenges to be faced. But one thing is for sure that it is just the beginning of a new era for the animation paradise.

Elements of effective graphic designs

To create the most beautiful design apart from creative idea one should have a clear understanding about the subject’s fundamentals.

There are 10 basic elements of effective graphic designs. They are as follow:

Line

Line is the first and the most basic element. Line plays a different role in drawing ad graphic designs. In drawing line is a stroke and in graphic designs it’s about two connecting points. Lines are benefited in dividing spaces and drawing an eye to the specific spaces.

Colour

For both the users and the designers colour plays the role of the most obvious elements of design. It can be used along with other elements like line and shapes etc or it can stand alone as a background. Colour creates the mood f the design and depicts the story of a brand. Every colour has a different story to tell which can further impress by the colour combinations.

Shape

Shapes, geographic or organic add interest. Shapes are basically used to emphasize a portion of the page as shape is defined by boundaries like line or colour. Everything used in graphic design is ultimately a shape. Now it’s your creativity to use these shapes in an interactive way.

Space

While designing a page, negative space is most underutilized and misunderstood aspect of designing for the page. The left blank part of a design whether white or some other colour, help to create an overall image. Create spaces using the negative space.

Texture

Websites & graphic designs do depend on the look and impression of texture on the screen. Textures can create a more three dimensional appearance on this two dimensional surfaces. It also builds an immersive world.

Typography

The single most important part of graphic and web design is typography. Like colour, texture and shapes the fonts you use tell readers you’re a serious online news magazine, a playful food blog or a vintage tea tins shops. Words are important, but the style of the world is should also be equally impressive.

Scale

Playing with the scale and size of your objects, shapes, types and other elements add interest and emphasis. How boring would a symmetrical website with all similarly sized ingredients be? Very. But the amount of variations will depend heavily on the content within. Subtle differences suit professional content, while bold ones prefer creative enterprises.

Dominance & Emphasis

The element of emphasis has more to do with an object, colour or style dominating another for a heightened sense of contrast. Contrast creates a focal point.

Balance

There are two kinds of balance; symmetry & asymmetry. Asymmetry is much preferred by the most designers, artist and creative folks for its eye catching nature.

Harmony

Harmony plays the key role of graphic design. Harmony is what you get when all the pieces work together.

Above mentioned elements are just one part of graphic designing there are more hundreds of rules and many more principles for creating more beautiful designs on and off the web. But these ten elements mentioned above are the basic essentials that will ensure anything you create is appealing, professional and perfect.

A Brief History of Digital Gaming

Digital gaming is nothing new; it was always around but in a different form. It came up years before and now has become an independent industry with great creativity and professional potential.

Origins (1940-1960)

The beginning of video games has its foundations in the attempt creating a world of fantacy. From the installation of first ENIAC computer to the today's powerful microprocessors; video games have always witnessed growth.

The ever first popular video game available was Nimrod, launched in 1951. Just after that IBM’s popular ‘Checkers’ game program (1950s) and William Higginbotham’s revolutionary ‘Tennis for Two’ (1958) were noticed.

Nascent stage (1960 – 1990)

In the year 1960, the first widely available game was introduced by MIT employee Steve Russell who created ‘Space war.' The very first step towards the commercialization of the digital gaming industry was taken by Nolan Bushnell founded Atari, Inc. in 1972.

In 1983 the video game market crashed and bankrupted several companies in the United States. The arcade industry reached its extreme between the years 1978-1990. ‘Space Invaders’ by Taito was such a blockbuster that it inspired scores of video game manufacturers to enter the market. This  age saw the advent of evergreen computer and arcade games such as ‘Pac-Man’ and ‘Donkey Kong’.

The golden years (1990- 2010)

The video game market brought about permanent players in the industry. In 1990 Nintendo came out with its next generation console known as ‘Super NES.'

PC gaming began to gain popularity 1991 onward . Id Software’s 1996 game ‘Quake’ pioneered online multi-player options in first-person shooters.

Nintendo released its 64-bit console, the Nintendo 64 in 1996. At the same time, Sony Corporation began to dominate the market with its popular PlayStation.

Nintendo announced the launch of its flagship product in 2002, the GameCube, which used 80mm mini-DVD discs, holding 1.4GB of data each – over 200 times the capacity of the largest N64 cartridge ROM.

Around the same time, Microsoft jumped into with the now popular Xbox. Mobile phones also entered the mainstream market during this time.

The future

Android, iPhone and Windows devices are the popular choice for digital gaming. The industry is ready to see an explosion of growth. Virtual reality and 3D gaming are soon to enter the mainstream market.

In our last blog we talked about 24fps International Short Film Festival. Today we will gear up MAAC Kolkata students to participate and make us proud.

Everybody has that moment in their life which made them feel on cloud nine, it’s time to share that moment with us and with the world. 24fps is giving that golden chance to all.

24fps International Short Film Festival Preparations

Since its inception in 1999, the aspiring artists from all over world are participating in 24fps International Short Film Festival. This festival takes place in Mumbai. The juries competition is open to any work made outside the major worldwide film studio system. The time duration for movies is 3 minutes. They appreciate the festival’s top films with the cash award.

MAAC Kolkata has always been a participant of this event. Students from all the three centers; MAAC Chowringhee, MAAC Rashbehari and MAAC Kankurgachi participates. Students from all the three centers always make sure to grab a prize; this has resulted for all of them to get a placement with different production houses. Proud Moment!

Every year they provide with a new theme for movies. This year, 2016 the theme is MOMENTS.

And the journey continues... Aniket The director.

In our last story we talked about Aniket's journey as a struggler, how he reached MAAC Rashbehari and how he decided to take his career up with animation. Today we will talk about his journey as a director.

Aniket started as an assistant director with some prominent producing houses in Kolkata and contributed in many hits. Shortly he decided to direct his own film independently which gave birth to a Bengali movie  ‘Saubala.’ And he decided to send ‘Saubala’ to festival De Cannes in the short film corner.

“My first project coincided with the real step into film fraternity, Cannes. I’m lucky, I know that. I will be continuing doing the kind of work that will bring me back here and out there in the world of international cinema. If that happens, who know one day Cannes might get to know me. For now, I’m just content with intent on soaking in the scenes, a walk in the clouds and lying by sleepy Blue Ocean” said Aniket.

Aniket thank a lot to his team for making his dream possible and making it a hit. He in future aims to follow footsteps of the great Bengali directors of Yester-Years who bought name and fame to the country by capturing the new face of a really evolving India, where past embraces present to create a comfortable uneasy future.

Journey of Aniket from MAAC to his Dictorial Venture...

Aniket a boy next door was one of us struggling in companies before he actually released and fulfill his dream in B-Town. He was  just a simple person like you and me who holds lots of dreams. He was not a bright student but he always carried his passion and determination to do something different and earn a name for himself. His passion to do something creative and different took him to step into the Animation Industry holding the hand of Maac Rashbehari.

During his struggle period he learnt about Maac Kolkata and its different centers and chooses MACC Rashbehari. Without wasting time he decided to step into the center for a free counselling session. There he happens to meet Mr. Naveen Choudhary, he not only encouraged him to peruse his dreams but also gave him assurance that there will be no looking back for him if he can excel in this field. His meeting was impressive enough for him to kick start and go forward to join Maac Rashbehari.
